My Rajasthan travel experience: Between palaces, deserts and vibrant chaos.
One of the places I travelled to during my ‘break’ was to India: where I experienced Rajasthan, a region that breathes history and magic. From the sunrise at the Taj Mahal to the narrow alleys of Jodhpur, every moment was a new discovery. I explored ancient forts, crossed endless deserts and enjoyed the frenetic charm of India’s colourful markets. On safari in Ranthambore, I saw tigers in the wild, while the tranquillity of Udaipur had me dreaming away by the water. Rajasthan is a place where the past remains tangible and mysticism grips you. This was not just any trip, this was a journey through time.
Arrival in Delhi and Start of the Adventure
My journey began in Delhi, where I was welcomed by Mahender, my driver from Driver India Private Tours (DIPT). He would guide me through the magical region of Rajasthan for the next 12 days. Our first destination, still just outside Rajasthan, but obviously indispensable: Agra, the city of the famous Taj Mahal. The road to Agra took me through vast, flat landscapes, where the smell of fresh masala chai prepared me for the wonders that lay ahead.
Agra Fort and Timeless Glory
In Agra, the programme also included the iconic Agra Fort. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, this imposing fort exuded the grandeur of ancient Mughal architecture. The story of Akbar the Great and his visionary architecture came alive as I walked through the massive gates. The hand-carved mosaics and hand-made decorations told a story of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Although the fort is only 30% accessible, that part is already breathtaking and rich in history.
After the fort, I visited a traditional carpet weaving workshop, where men and women made beautiful carpets. The colourful crafts and stories behind these works of art made it clear that Agra is more than just its monuments.
Magic of the Taj Mahal at Sunrise
The next morning, I got up early for a sunrise tour to the Taj Mahal. Although I had already seen many pictures, the experience up close was even more impressive. The serene beauty of this huge marble mausoleum, built as a tribute to Shah Jahan’s beloved wife, gave me a sense of humility and awe. The exquisite inlay details and symmetry of the building were breathtaking. Walking around the gardens, among the birds, felt like I was walking in a fairy tale.
On our way to Ranthambore National Park, we made a visit to Fatehpur Sikri, the Chand Baori Stepwell and Harshsha Mata Temple in Abhaneri as well, both were wonderful places. Fatehpur Sikri is supposed to be the successor to the Agra Fort. This was also the first stop in Rajasthan during this Rajasthan travel experience.
Ranthambore: In Search of the Tiger
The next stop was Ranthambore National Park, where an exciting safari awaited me. The safari introduced me to India’s rich flora and fauna. After an early breakfast and several hours of driving through the park, the guide suddenly called out ‘tiger!’, and there, in the shade the grass in the riverbed, was a magnificent Bengal tiger. This moment was indescribable, a dream come true. A real tiger, in the wild!
The park’s nature offered more than just tigers; peacocks, deer and exotic birds graced the landscape. It was like driving around in a petting zoo; it had something surreal about it. The park’s leisurely pace and diverse flora made every safari ride a new discovery. We ended up seeing 4 tigers during 3 safari drives. It was really very beautiful to see and experience.
Jaipur: The Pink City and Its Splendour
Then we continued our journey to Jaipur, also known as the pink city. Here I visited the beautiful Amber Fort. Located on a hill, the fort offers an impressive view of the city. The inside was equally fascinating, with rooms decorated with mirrors and artful details. The starry sky effects, visible at night due to the use of candles, were especially magical.
After the fort, I visited the Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory. The grandeur of this complex and the precision with which the observatories were built left me amazed. After all, this is something that was built hundreds of years ago! It was fascinating to see how architecture and science come together here in an ode to the sky.
Jodhpur: The Blue City and its Treasures
The trip then took me to Jodhpur, Rajasthan’s blue city. Here I discovered the majestic charm of the Mehrangarh Fort, a gigantic structure towering high above the city. The fort gave a panoramic view of the city, where the blue houses stretched out like a sea. I wandered the narrow streets, discovered local markets, and enjoyed the hospitality of the locals. What struck me most was the tranquillity and friendliness I encountered everywhere. This was something I experienced more northerly differently, so it took some getting used to. Jodhpur is definitely a city I would like to return to again.
It was also in Jodhpur where I bought very beautiful fabrics, and other souvenirs, and with the guide we visited a fantastic kind of pawnshop, which besides antiques and curiosities, also made fabrics, beautiful woven fabrics, which were worked by hand. Near the clock tower was also a super nice shop with a very nice man, who helped me find my way around Jodhpur, he could explain exactly what to look out for when buying pashmina and other fabrics, and what were good prices. The man was honest and sincere and could tell me a lot about Jodhpur and the region, which was very nice.
Udaipur: City of Lakes
The next stop was Udaipur, also known as the city of lakes. The romantic City Palace on the shores of Lake Pichola exuded elegant grandeur. With its courtyards, beautiful gardens and ornate pavilions, the palace offered a soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The palace is a fusion of Rajput and Mughal influences, making it unique in architectural style.
In the evening, I enjoyed a beautiful sunset from one of the many rooftops, overlooking the Lake Palace located in the middle of the lake. The city came alive at dusk, with lights reflecting on the surface of the water, creating an almost magical atmosphere. From here I took a flight back to Delhi, as my Rajasthan travel experience was coming to an end.
Ancient Traditions and Spiritual Tranquillity
The final day of my trip was spent with some quick sightseeing in Delhi, a lot of places we didn’t have time to enter because of time, so I will definitely have to come back as well. In Delhi visited the Jama Masjid, the Red Fort, the Akshardham temple (pictures were not aloud), Humayun’s Tomb and the Lotus Temple. Each of these sites had its own unique beauty and deep historical significance, which brought me closer to the spiritual side of India, and makes me want to go back to India for sure!
A Journey of Wonders
This trip through Rajasthan was a deep dive into India’s rich culture, vibrant history and breathtaking nature. The guides were very friendly but also full of stories, which at times was a bit much to remember all of them. From the architectural splendour of the Mughal monuments to the colourful streets of the cities, visiting the artisans, every moment was unforgettable. It was an adventure that not only showed me the beauty of the country, but also inspired me to continue travelling and exploring.
